P Pan and Scan Refers to the process of cropping a widescreen movie to fit a fullscreen video presentation (e.g. VHS, DVD, etc.) The good thing is that the picture fills up your traditionally square television screen. The bad thing is that you'll see less of what was shot, due to the extensive cropping. No right-minded movie buff would accept this format, with the exception of movies from the early days of cinema (e.g. Casablanca, Citizen Kane, etc.), and television productions, which were shot on a fullscreen, 4:3 aspect ratio. Paparazzi A group of photographers who make a living out of taking candid pictures of celebrities, sometimes naked ones. Pick-up A minor shooting during Post-production to improve or amend specific segments in a scene. Plot The storyline or main story of a movie. Point of View Shot (POV) A shot of what a character is looking at. The shot could be through the eyes of a character, over his shoulder, or even a non-existent character, or a "nobody POV". There is also a "God POV", e.g. at the beginning of Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Post-production The last stage of a movie production, after the completion of Principal Photography, where they start editing the movie and adding the sound, music and special effects. Some Dubbing or Additional Dialogue Recording (ADR) are also done at this stage. See also Pick-up and Re-shoot. Premise The "key selling point" of a movie. Example: The premise of Armageddon is that "a group of people must fly into space and plant a nuclear bomb on a meteor before it reaches Earth and destroys our planet." Pre-production The early stage of a movie production where preparations are made for principal photography, e.g. casting of actors, securing funds, writing the screenplay, etc. Pre-visualisation, Pre-viz, Pre-vis, Animatics Like a high-tech storyboard, where rough, low-quality 3D animation is used to visualise a sequence in a movie prior to principal photography or special effects work. Principal Photography The part in a movie production where they are actually shooting the movie. Producer Essentially the big boss of a movie production. He or she raises the money, hires the talents, handles distribution and sometimes even influence the creative process. There is also another role called the Executive Producer. This person should be the boss of the bosses (producers), but the role is so ambiguous that I think you needn't bother. Production, Movie The process of making a movie. Consists of three basic parts - Pre-production, Principal Photography and Post-production. Props The items used by actors (costume, weaponry, etc.) or decorating the background (ornaments, lamps, etc.) in a movie scene. Short form for "property". Protagonist The lead character in a movie. |
