T Take A take is a continuously filmed portion of a movie, usually between the call of "action" and "cut" by a director. A long take can stretch up to several minutes or hours, and is usually difficult to set up. Directors such as Martin Scorsese, David Lean and Stanley Kubrick are famous for using numerous and/or extensive long takes in their movies. See also One-take. Tanked Flopped. See Flop. Teaser A very short trailer, usually lasting no more than a minute, and sometimes may not even contain any actual footage from a movie. It is usually released months before the release of the movie, in order to create hype and awareness. Theatre See Cinema. Theme A general idea or message conveyed by a movie. Example: one of the themes in Schindler's List may be "the evils of genocide." Thriller (genre) Movies with suspenseful storylines, usually pitting the hero or heroes against insurmountable odds, or relentless villains. Some action or horror movies can be thrillers too, so there is no hard and fast rule in terms of how you classify a movie's genre. Trailer A movie advertisement that showcases excerpts from the actual movie. Usually lasts between 1 to 3 minutes. Twist An unexpected and/or shocking plot revelation. Example (spoiler!): Bruce Willis realises he's a ghost in the Sixth Sense. |
