Previously, I have admitted about not having
seen any of legendary director Robert Altman's
movies. This week, I've got a few more revelations. One, I
haven't seen any of the Rocky movies, and Rocky Balboa
a.k.a. Rocky VI is just around the corner. Two, I missed this
year's Golden Horse Film Festival because I wasn't even
keeping track of it! Some Big Movie Freak I am, huh?
No excuse, right? But I'll try explaining anyway. Okay, firstly
with all due respect to the late Mr Altman, his movies ain't
exactly the type that jumps out at you and makes you wanna
watch it real badly. Like any other film classics, I'd probably
get to watch them someday and totally regret not seeing
them earlier, so there will be a little bit of justice done there,
if that will satisfy you Altman fans. As for Rocky... well, like
the prison movie genre (Shawshank Redemption, Prison on
Fire, Cool Hand Luke, etc. etc.) there are no shortage of
boxing movies out there either, good and bad, and I'm
getting pretty tired of the genre already, after watching
Somebody Up There Loves Me (Aaron Kwok), Million Dollar
Baby, Raging Bull, Love on Delivery (Stephen Chow), etc.
etc. Rocky (Part 1) could turn out to be the best of the lot,
though. I promise to watch that one, at least.
Then we have the Golden Horse Fest. Hey, don't get me
wrong, but I'm always looking forward to the show every year
to find out what's good and what's reallly good in the
Chinese cinema circuit. Just that with the whole language
barrier thing, I wasn't exactly well-informed about it by my
predominantly English-based sources. I'll remedy this by
checking the Golden Horse site around October every year
from now on. Movies I wanna watch after reading the results:
Exiled, Silk, Crazy Stone.
To my defense, I totally dig European movies like Wings of
Desire, Delicatessen, City of Lost Children, Cinema Paradiso
and Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down, which more than validates my
big movie freakiness. Try beating that, ya Freaks.
And no, The Transporter does not count. - BMF

I know, I know. The "Chinese Oscars" was on 25 November, and it's 7
December today... err, better late than never? This year's big winner was
Aaron Kwok's drama After This Our Exile (now showing), which took the
Best Picture, Best Actor (Aaron Kwok) and Best Supporting Actor (Goum
Ian Iskandar) awards. Peter Chan's grand musical Perhaps Love walked
away with four for direction, actress Zhou Xun, cinematographer Peter
Pau and original song, Crossroad. Johnnie To's assassin movie Exiled
only managed to nab the Best Action Choreography prize, while period
action-drama The Banquet scored two for Best Art Direction and Best
Make-up and Costume Design. Personally, I can't wait to see PRC
comedy Crazy Stone and sci-fi-horror Silk. Below are the nominee lists
for the major awards. See the rest here, or hop over to the Golden Horse
Film Festival site. - BMF

64th golden globe awards
nominations announced
15 December 2006
Not many surprises in the nominations for next year's
precursor to the Academy Awards (Oscars). The contenders
are mostly of the high-brow, critically-acclaimed variety (e.g. Babel, Blood
Diamond, Little Children, The Queen, etc.) with the exception of Borat,
Pirates and a few others. United 93 and World Trade Center are
conspicuously absent in every category. I'm surprised to see Bobby and
The Departed getting noms for Best Motion Picture - Drama. I saw quite a
few unfavourable reviews for the former, and the latter's just an
unimaginative rehash of a crime thriller milestone. A few overlaps in some
categories, like Eastwood's double-noms for his back-to-back war dramas
Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, and DiCaprio's two Best
Actor noms. Some were nominated for movies that hasn't even been
released yet, like Miss Potter (no relations to Harry), The Pursuit of
Happyness and Dreamgirls. There's also love for singers-turned-actors
too, with acting noms for Beyonce Knowles and American Idol finalist
Jennifer Hudson for their work in Dreamgirls. For an award show that
claims to be more laid back than the Oscars, I was hoping they went for
movies like The Prestige, Casino Royale, and V for Vendetta.
Movies I feel like watching after reading the noms: The Devil Wears
Prada, Clint's double-feature, Happy Feet, Little Miss Sunshine and The
Queen (my choice for this one was not in any way influenced by the
recent conclusion of Princess D's investigations... really). Movies I'm
going to watch regardless of the noms: Apocalypto, Borat, Pan's
Labyrinth, Dreamgirls, and The Fountain.
Other interests of note: New television series, Heroes (about, err,
superheroes) gets best drama series and supporting actor noms. Mighty
interested to watch this one, and also Medium, Monk, Broken Trail and
Sleeper Cell.
Winners will be announced on the show, 15 January at 8pm (Singapore
time - 16 January, 9am). The major categories are listed below. For the
full list, visit the Golden Globe official site. - BMF

pictures not so perfect
20 December 2006
Great in concept, not-so-great in execution, as the saying
goes. Thanks to feedback from some friends, the newer review pages
have been looking pretty slick with the added pictures. But, having
additional pictures also mean additional time is needed, which affects the
number of reviews I’m able to put up, let alone the time I have to even
watch any movie. Also, I have been receiving reviews from Will2K
(Rocky), Spoovans (Christine, Batman Forever) and even from one
potential BMF member (who reviewed Happy Feet), yet because I donâ
€™t have the pictures to the movies they reviewed, I’m unable to put
them up.
Going back to my previous point about some people not reading enough,
should I be pandering to said people by putting up movie stills even
though they may end up not reading the reviews anyway, or revert to my
original, picture-less format, thus increasing the weekly content, but
forgoing the attention-deficit readership? Majority rules, so let me know
your thoughts. Email me at bmf@bigmoviefreak.com. - BMF
