This sh*t is too old for me Hothead #1 Detective Sargeant Nick Conklin (Michael Douglas), when not being investigated by Internal Affairs for corruption, hangs out with fellow officer Detective Charlie Vincent (Andy Garcia) at swanky bars frequented by the mob and the yakuza, only to stumble into Hothead #2, yakuza lieutenant Sato (Yusaku Matsuda) during one of his murder sprees. Nabbing Sato was only the beginning, as Conklin and Vincent soon finds out when they escorted the captured criminal back to Tokyo. Sato escapes right after they landed at the airport, and Conklin and Vincent pursue their quarry in unfamiliar territories armed only with Eighties hairstyles and macho cop-speak ("I usually get kissed before I get f***ed").
It's a really generic Eighties buddy-cop movie, complete with renegade hero cop, dispensable cop partners, obtuse police chiefs, and one-dimensional homicidal villains. Though Michael Douglas played it a little too whiny and obnoxious, the movie's still fun to watch for the macho speak ("Now, you got a counterfeiting ring goin' on and you should talk to your partner before you go to the suits. So f*** you very much!") corny one-liners ("You watch your tail, cowboy") and gratuitous violence (e.g. shotgunning, throat-slashing, and slo-mo beheading among others, although this particular scene was partially cut from the Region 3 DVD, no pun intended). You might notice Ridley Scott's trademark visual flourishes, but the movie's dated look and feel (I call it nostalgia) sort of overwhelmed everything. Watch it with friends and lots of beer. - BMF |
