Pixar's latest runs out of gas
Saw Pixar's latest outing, Cars. For automobile aficionados, they'll drool over this one. But for a car illiterate like me, the experience was no different than staring at a parking lot full of cars for two hours, but slightly better because at least they can talk and move. Most of the automobile-related jokes and puns were nearly lost to me, and maybe to other non-motorheads too. You can make a joke about a piston, but only if your audience know what it is in the first place. Anyway, I'm probably in the minority, as most "real" men would know their cars like the back of their hands. However, the ladies and kids are going to be a hard sell if Pixar thinks the cutesy characters alone are more than enough to bowl them over, when there's a lack of relatable jokes as well as an ironically slow-moving first hour. The story's kind of unoriginal too... heard people frequently comparing this to a Michael J. Fox movie called Doc Hollywood. Doc what? Exactly. It's only half way through the movie that the engine kind of finally warmed up, and you start to dig into the characters a little more. But sadly the really slow first stretch is more than enough to mar this cartoon from being another Pixar classic. I guess the winning streak has finally come to an end. - BMF
