| Bad job! Hancock started off amazingly well; I liked the action and everything. The best thing about Hancock is of course, Will Smith. His 'cool' gestures and looks will definitely make many Will Smith wannabes out there who will be trying very hard to be like him. Probably they will be searching for that 'eagle symbol' knit cap that he wore during the earlier parts of the movie. The sunglasses would also be much sought after. Hancock shows that being a superhero ain't easy (similar to early scenes in The Incredibles) where sometimes when you try to save someone or help somebody, you might end up doing more damage or cause more chaos. Instead of having a clean-cut and good guy image superhero in tight spandex suit, Hancock is a jobless alcoholic hobo who hangs around the streets and has no respect from the public. The movie is fun, especially when Hancock is in hot pursuit of the baddies. And of course, Will Smith has an upper hand with his endless comedy gigs which could easily entertain anyone before they doze off. Action scenes not to be missed:- 1) Beginning “Superman” scene Superman Hancock showing his flying abilities (while drunk!), damaging parts of buildings, destroying signboards, and police cars while pursuing a group of Yakuzas! It was very entertaining and fun to watch. 2) Train stopper This is somewhat the 'funny' version of all Superman and The Incredibles 'train stopper' moves. Instead of slowing the train down like the good ol' Superman two hands front, one leg back support technique, Hancock does it with a comedic way – crashing into the train to stop it! This left a huge hole on the front of the train, but still not as funny as the 'human mark' in Bruce Lee's The Big Boss. The train wreck saved a guy's life, but destroyed much of government and public properties. This resulted in the public disliking him completely. 3) Hancock’s bad landing Hancock saved Ray from the train wreck and was given a name card to contact him. Hancock was broke and needed money to survive. So he paid a visit to Ray's home by flight, Superman style! The problem was in his landing. Crashed onto the road, leaving a massive hole. This will give headaches to the nearby residents and the road workers! 4) Jail scene To be accepted back by the people, Hancock must make himself be missed by everyone, so he goes to jail by the mayor’s order. In jail, Hancock was surrounded by a bunch of criminals (gangsters, crooks, etc.); who were there because of him! Remember Incredible Hulk or Spider-man 1, where one individual or a group will always get a deserving punishment from the super-hero? In this case, he warned two convicts that had confronted him that he would stick one of their heads into the other's ass. True enough, when he was denied passage, he stuck the head of the guy into the other guy's ass as promised! However, this scene is not original. There was a similar scene like this in Bruce Almighty where Jim Carrey was challenged by a group of thugs. He warned them that he would make a monkey come out of the guy's ass if he doesn't let him go free. And as promised, he made the monkey come out of his ass. Ass jokes! 5) More jail scenes I like the parts where Hancock cut open a glass panel with his fingernails to talk with Ray on the other side, removed a door as if it was paper, and jumped out of the jail perimeter to collect a basketball that was thrown over the fence, then jumped back in. 6) Bank Robbery This is probably the best action scene I’ve ever enjoyed for a very long time. Cool as usual, Hancock was dressed in a tight, spandex outfit with his favourite 'Eagle' symbol imprinted behind (a gift from Ray). This outfit is similar to X-Men's suits. Someone even mentioned it looking like Wolverine's outfit somewhere in the movie! I won't elaborate more… just go watch it! 7) Kiosk scene There was this scene where Hancock pulled out a robber and threw him into a fridge full of can drinks. Cool stuff! Then, while confronting the other robber (with gun held to a cashier's head), he got shot before disengaging him with a bar of candy. At this point, he couldn't recover from the shot and was bleeding profusely. As a result, he was sent to the hospital right away. The worse scenes Sadly, I only like Hancock from the beginning towards the middle part. Then, there was this shocker (maximum twist!) of the story – Ray's wife is actually Hancock's real wife! Then all of the sudden she possesses Hancock's superhero strength and could match him. The difference is that she could do the ‘Storm’ (X-Men) powers by commanding twisters and lightning. All this was too much for me to bear. However, I was already quite worried how this movie was going to end, therefore the truth was answered at last. The fight scene between Hancock and Mary was bad. To make things worse, they actually crashed into the building where Ray was doing his presentation, leaving a big gap on one side for Ray to see them fighting on the ground, many stories down below! Coincidence? Well, too much of a coincidence! And let’s not forget that the 'pirate' guy, whose left arm got sliced off by Hancock during the bank robbery, was also seeking revenge! Therefore, he partnered with the two guys involved in the head got stuck in ass situation to escape jail and seek vengeance. Well, at this point, I was thinking, since there was no kryptonite, what would be Hancock's weakness? But the thing is, they seemed to know that Hancock was injured and vulnerable. So they went to the hospital to kill him. Then there was this John Woo shoot ‘em up scene involving Hancock, who has his powers on and off, depending on his proximity to Ray's wife, which was really confusing and didn't make sense. In the end, it was Ray that has to become the superhero by saving Hancock and slicing ol’ Pirate's remaining right hand, thus he has no hands in the end! How funny! I thought I was watching Lex Luthor being tortured! Well, this was a great movie from the beginning up to the middle. After that, I was very disappointed with it because of the poor storyline and bad ending. Despite the great first half of action, I feel that this movie cannot be rated as 'Good'. It's still behind Incredible Hulk and Iron Man. Therefore, I have to give it an ‘Average’, but it definitely did not suck. Sorry that I couldn't agree with BMF’s 'good' rating as how I agreed with him about Indiana Jones 4, because that was way too clear cut horrible. Don't get me wrong, Hancock ain't bad like RottenTomatoes.com’s 36% and all, but it's just ok. Reason's because this kinda movies can't end well. Only unless the twist was superb, but it just wasn't. Directed by Peter Berg (The Kingdom, Friday Night Lights) and written by Vincent Ngo (Beat the Devil, Hostage) and Vince Gilligan (Home Fries, Wilder Napalm). Stars Will Smith, Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron. |
