T H E S P E C I A L E D I T I O N S In 1997, Star Wars creator George Lucas re-released the Star Wars trilogy on the twentieth anniversary of the first Star Wars movie, but with a controversial twist. Computer graphics were used to "improve" some of the dated special effects and change the context of certain scenes (e.g. the Han-Greedo scene at the cantina) in the 1997 editions. The alterations upset some fans and purists, but that did not deter Lucas in releasing another version with more controversial changes in 2004. In 2006, presumably due to overwhelming fan feedback and studio pressure, Lucas finally greenlighted the DVDs of the trilogy in their original, CG- and edit-free form.

The Original Star Wars Trilogy Theatrical Cut DVD, finally released in 2006.
Good: - Finally, the original theatrical cut with no CG enhancements released on DVD format - Includes the 2004 edited and CG-enhanced version, identical to the 2004 box set discs Bad: - Special features disc from 2004 box set not included - Theatrical version does not have the 2004 version's video and audio improvements - Missed out opportunity to make new commentaries, this time with Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford (missing from the 2004 version's commentaries) - Special effects are glaringly dated without the Special Edition's CG touch-ups.

Conclusion: The Star Wars DVDs are essentially just the DVDs from the 2004 box set bundled with the first-time-on-DVD original theatrical versions. Unless you still have the VHS or LaserDiscs from the Eighties, the original theatrical versions are no longer commercially available anywhere else, so this set is only vital to anyone nostalgic about the movies and wants to own a copy of the original theatrical versions.
