After a few weeks of showing a censored version tame enough for the lucrative teen market, the powers that be are finally releasing an R-rated Lust, Caution for the adults and movie connoiseurs. Based on how well the movie performed in Taiwan and Hong Kong, you could say Lust, Caution is the adult Transformers of the year, though maybe somebody at the top misread this as being literally like Transformers in terms of drawing in the adolescent crowd, prompting this misinformed person to apply for an NC-16 rating. I'm not sure if the mature audiences who unwittingly saw the neutered version would pay again to watch the movie, albeit with more Tony Leung nakedness. These disgruntled folks probably got an uncensored copy of Ang Lee's thriller from JB by now. I'm glad I held out for the R-rated version, but then again if the grown-ups and aficionados aren't coming, I dread that I might be sitting alongside patrons of Yangtze theatre next Wednesday. Aiya, what for man??? Preffer to watch tis type of show at home, with privacy man, wink wink. Also i can go directly to my bed during the slow, broing partss.
ReplyDeleteThough I claim to be quite an open-minded person, but I still feel a little embarrassed watching sex scenes with a roomful of strangers, so I get your point. But every cent spent on pirated products is a cent lost by the film industry. Think of the poor, starving artists!

ReplyDeleteHey everyone! Appreciate the comments. Have to agree with boybeng. Hulk and especially Superman Returns aren't the best examples of comic book adaptations. I'm quite certain I have little love for SR, but I'm gonna check out Hulk again. There are way too many critical recommendations for this flick, so I have to be sure I'm not missing anything. Hope to put a review up before 2008.

Not to rain on your parade, but an NC-17 movie has MORE sex and nudity than an R-rated film.
ReplyDeleteIn Singapore, they have a rating called "NC-16", which is lower than "R". I know "NC17" is more hardcore than "R" in USA. If I lived in the US, I wouldn't have needed to complain on my blog since I'm free to watch the "NC17" version. In Singapore, I had no choice for a time.
